How Magnesium Can Improve Quality Of Sleep

Quality over quantity? The answer is yes, even when it comes to sleep.
Czech researchers conducted a new study on sleep where they examined the effects of sleep duration, sleep quality and social jetlag on quality of life. While the findings are not a big surprise for health experts, they provide a whole new take on the importance of sleep quality above everything else.
After gathering responses from more than 4,000 participants, researchers found that sleep quality is the biggest predictor on a person’s quality of life. In other words, sleep quality proves to be even more important than sleep duration and timing.
“Our analyses show individuals who experience higher quality sleep also have greater satisfaction with life, more wellbeing, feel healthier, perceive less work stress and are happier,” researchers said.
In contrast, when an individual sleeps too much or too poorly, their quality of life decreases.
But, what exactly is sleep quality?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, “sleep quality is the measurement of how well you’re sleeping.” A good way to measure sleep quality is by analyzing how an individual feels after waking up. Usually, when a person wakes up feeling rested and restored, that most likely means they have good sleep quality. However, if a person wakes up feeling tired, that could be an indicator of poor sleep quality.
MEDICATION AND REM
Oftentimes, when people start having severe sleep issues (insomnia, getting up in the middle of the night, etc.) they decide to visit the doctor in hopes of solving their problem. While prescribed medications to improve sleep may seem like they are helping, they might be doing more harm than good.
Many prescribed sleeping pills interfere with the REM cycle, which is essential in achieving a good quality of sleep. During the REM cycle, individuals are in the deepest sleep stage. Therefore, when an individual is deprived from that REM cycle, they will likely feel exhausted when they wake up the next morning.
So, how can someone improve their sleep quality without compromising their REM cycle?
By getting to the root of the problem.
Poor quality of sleep may be indicating a lack of some nutrients that are essential in helping achieve optimal sleep. Magnesium is one of them.
MAGNESIUM AND SLEEP
As one would expect with such an essential mineral in charge of more than 300 body functions, magnesium also plays a huge role in a person’s quality of sleep.
While magnesium deficiency can lead to insomnia, one of the biggest indicators of magnesium deficiency is in experiencing restless sleep (feeling tired the following morning despite having “slept” a lot,) and also in waking frequently during the night. According to experts, maintaining healthy magnesium levels lead to deeper and restful sleep — and in turn, improves sleep quality.
Furthermore, magnesium can also help insomnia linked to the sleep disorder known was restless-leg syndrome.
HOW TO INCREASE MAGNESIUM LEVELS
There are a couple of ways in which someone can increase their magnesium levels, but having a diet rich in magnesium and additionally taking a magnesium supplement are the most effective.
Foods rich in magnesium include: greens, nuts, seeds, dry beans, whole grains, spinach, edamame, wheat, avocado, and dark chocolate. But, as mentioned previously, many of foods that are naturally rich in magnesium lose a big quantity of nutrients due to the current agricultural processes.
The best way to ensure a person is getting the right amount of magnesium is by taking a magnesium supplement. However, there are many different types of magnesium, and it is important to make sure that they are consuming and absorbing all of the different types.
BiOptimizers’ magnesium supplement named “Magnesium Breakthrough” provides all seven forms of magnesium in one capsule. Plus, it has a very high absorption rate.
The bottomline is: even if you sleep the recommended 6-8 hours every night, that doesn’t necessarily mean your sleep quality is good. Pay attention to how you feel the next morning, and take the necessary measures to improve your sleep quality, and in consequence, your quality of life.
